It is 1929 with gangster warfare in New York. Dandy Dan's hoodlums terrorize the district, exterminating undesirables with their new weapon splurge guns. His rival is Fat Sam, who runs the Grand Slam Speakeasy, but Fat Sam's gang still use old fashioned pies. Fat Sam engages the help of Bugsy Malone, a smooth city slicker who has been more occupied in sweet talking Blousey Brown, a would be singer. With Bugsy's help, Fat Sam escapes from a frame up but he learns later that Dandy Dan's mob have splurged nearly all his gang. They've also destroyed his sarsaparilla and grocery rackets - the whole empire's gone! There's only one hope left. Fat Sam pays Bugsy $400 in exchange for more help. Bugsy, who has promised to take Blousey to Hollywood, has to break his date with her. Meanwhile Bugsy and Leroy Smith, a guy with an awesome punch, witness a secret delivery of splurge guns at Dock 17. With a bunch of down and outs, they help themselves from the crates. Then the police arrive, led by Captain Smolsky and Lieutenant O'Dreary. Bugsy and the gang escape through a trapdoor. Finally Dandy Dan prepares for a showdown at Fat Sam's speakeasy. When his mob burst in, Bugsy and the guys let 'em have it the works. Splurge, custard pies, flour bombs... Out of the gooey pandemonium it emerges that Bugsy and Blousey have made it up. Peace has broken out at last.
Cast Breakdown:
Bugsy Malone – With an Irish father and an Italian mother he naturally grew up a little confused. He is no hood. He’s been around them, sure. He’d had his scrapes but generally came out on top.
Vocal Range – Baritone/Tenor
Blousey Brown – Blousey has always wanted to be famous. She got the bug very early – at the age of three she gave an impromptu recital for family at Thanksgiving. She’s moved to the big city to seek fame.
Vocal Range - Soprano
Fizzy – The janitor at Fat Sam’s Grand Slam. He dreams of a life on the stage.
Vocal Range - Tenor
Fat Sam – There is no doubt in Fat Sam’s mind – he is the Kingpin of the Lower East Side. Like most gangsters he clawed his way up from the street. There isn’t a racket or shady deal that Fat Sam doesn’t have his podgy fingers in – or so he believes.
Vocal Range - Baritone
Tallulah – Fat Sam’s girlfriend and star of the Grand Slam. Tallulah is as cool as they come.
Vocal Range - Mezzo
Dandy Dan – Fat Sam’s rival. Dandy Dan has devoted his life to extravagant exhibitions of showy cool. He chooses his clothes with as much care as he uses in choosing tactic to outwit Fat Sam.
Vocal Range - Tenor
Leroy Smith – A soft, cuddly teddy bear who grew up in a tough neighbourhood. He has a kindness from inside him that shines in his eyes. But if you messed around too far with him you risked Leroy’s right hook.
Vocal Range - Tenor
Cagey Joe – Owner of Sluggers Gym.
Vocal Range - Baritone
Detective O’Dreary – O’Dreary is the classic Bronx flatfoot who was promoted for fear of what he might get up to if left alone to patrol the sidewalks. Not the sharpest crayon in the box.
Captain Smolsky – The truth is that if Smolsky could make even one arrest they would run a headline in the Police Gazette proclaiming a miracle. A hot head with a short temper.
